Self Confidence Equals a Sense of Purpose

Filling that Sense of Purpose

No matter how old or young we are, or what gender, or what we do in life, we all need to have a sense of purpose.  We want to feel as though we matter and that others see something positive in us. We want to belong. It’s no secret that people who have a sense of purpose are healthier both physically and mentally. Why? Because those without a sense of purpose feel they have little to offer and may even sometimes feel like they are a burden to their loved ones and want to give up. This includes those with special needs. So how can we help?

Sports Equals Self-Confidence

It has been proven that physical activity is important for everybody, and that includes the child or adult with special needs. Not only does the activity help with keeping the body moving, it can help instill confidence in oneself.  Most sports require relationship and team building; it doesn’t matter if it’s for a professional or amateur team, or just for fun, the rewards can be the same. Our sports programs, including basketball, baseball, football, soccer and other games, helps children with a variety of special needs to grow both athletically and socially in a safe and fun environment. Be The Best Sport classes provide a way to acquire new skills through an array of drills and games, while developing social skills. The kids are not only having a good time, but are building self-confidence during these fun activities.

Self Confidence Equals a Sense of Purpose

When one feels confident, they feel a sense of purpose. No matter who we are, that’s a valuable attribute. The author of Be Excellent at Anything, Tony Schwartz, says, “Confidence equals security equals positive emotion equals better performance.”  Who doesn’t recall when the training wheels came off their bike and they were able to breeze down the street on their own? Remember how freeing that felt? We certainly remember and can give that same feeling to those with special needs. No matter who you are, there is a sense of accomplishment when those training wheels come off.  Not only is the child grinning from ear to ear, but so is the coach who got them there. The accomplishment leads to the desire to do more, something they were previously hesitant about, which in turn, once again, gives a sense of purpose.
